If you’ve been dreaming about a cozy fall wedding surrounded by colorful trees, mountain views, and the warm glow of a cabin, you’re not alone.

This fall, I’ve photographed several weddings and elopements in cabins and Airbnbs throughout the Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge area, and I can absolutely see why couples love them. The mix of intimacy, comfort, and natural beauty is hard to beat.

But as with anything in the wedding world, not all cabin weddings are created equal. If you’re considering booking an Airbnb or cabin for your wedding, here’s what I’ve learned (and what I wish every couple knew before booking).


The Not-So-Pretty Side of Cabin Weddings

Let’s start with the honest part: not every Airbnb or cabin makes a great ceremony space. Some of these homes are built right into the mountains, which sounds beautiful until you realize that means steep rock driveways or porches fully covered and shaded.

Covered porches can make things tricky for photographers. The lighting under a porch is often much darker than the bright mountain view behind you, so your photos may need a flash to look balanced. I’ve photographed weddings in these situations, and I do know how to use flash, but it’s definitely not my favorite setup.

If your heart is set on a porch ceremony, make sure your photographer is comfortable using flash and knows how to work with mixed lighting. And if you want those sweeping mountain views without technical headaches, I recommend finding a nearby scenic overlook or open field for portraits. It makes such a difference and really helps your wedding day feel less like an elopement and more like a complete celebration.

What Makes the Perfect Cabin Wedding Spot

The best Airbnb weddings I’ve photographed have one thing in common: open space.

A backyard, a small field, or even a hilltop area near the cabin can completely transform the experience. One of my favorite weddings this fall took place at a cabin with a sloping backyard, a gazebo, and a valley view that stretched for miles. Guests had space to relax, the couple had room for a ceremony setup, and the photos turned out stunning.

If you’re hunting for the right cabin, look for one that offers:

  • An open yard or field for your ceremony
  • Easy access to a nearby overlook or scenic drive
  • Enough space for your guests (usually 50 or fewer)
  • Permission from the host to actually host your wedding (this part is huge!)

Please, Please Tell Your Host You’re Having a Wedding

I can’t stress this enough:never book an Airbnb or cabin without letting the host know you’re having a wedding. Even a small elopement counts. It’s the easiest way to get your event shut down, and the last thing anyone wants is to be kicked out or lose their lodging on your wedding night. Transparency protects you, your guests, and your vendors.

Why I Love Cabin Weddings

While there are a few challenges, photographing cabin weddings is something I truly love. These celebrations are smaller, slower, and more personal. There’s less rushing around, and couples have more time just to be together. My favorite part is always the couple portraits, when we sneak away to a beautiful overlook or field and capture the two of you soaking in the day and the view.
