The holidays are the perfect time to capture joyful family memories, and working with a family photographer can make the process easy and stress-free. If you’re planning a holiday session for your children, preparation is key to getting beautiful, natural photos that you’ll treasure for years to come.
Whether you’re booking a 15-minute mini-session or a longer family session, these tips will help your kids feel comfortable, happy, and ready to smile for the camera. For example, my Knoxville indoor Christmas mini-sessions at Highlight Studio are designed to be quick, fun, and full of holiday cheer, giving families five edited images in a cozy, natural-light studio.
1. Talk About the Session Ahead of Time
Kids do best when they know what to expect. Explain that they’ll be taking fun holiday photos with the family and that it’s okay to laugh, move, or be silly. Mini-sessions are fast-paced, so helping your child understand the plan can make the experience smooth and enjoyable.
2. Choose Comfortable Holiday Outfits
Pick outfits that are comfortable, coordinated, and festive. Avoid scratchy fabrics or tight clothing that could distract your child. Cozy layers, sweaters, and soft textures make photos look great and keep kids feeling happy.
3. Bring Familiar Comfort Items or Snacks
A favorite toy, blanket, or stuffed animal can help children feel secure during the session. If you bring a snack or item for your child, please make sure it’s okay to appear in the photos. I want every session to be stress-free, and taking an item away from a child can cause a meltdown, so it’s best to plan ahead and bring items that can stay in frame if needed.
4. Schedule Around Naps and Meals
Timing is everything! A well-rested and fed child is more likely to smile naturally. For mini-sessions, which only last 15 minutes, planning around naps and snacks ensures the session flows smoothly and you get the best moments captured.
5. Keep Expectations Realistic
Mini-sessions are short by design and perfect for busy families. During my Knoxville family mini-sessions, each family receives five beautifully edited images, so focus on enjoying the time together rather than getting every perfect pose. Authentic smiles, giggles, and even silly moments make the most memorable photos.
6. Make It Fun
Encourage your children to move, play, and interact with props. Music, playful games, or silly faces can help kids relax and show their personalities on camera. I will help guide these moments so they feel natural and joyful.
