A Detail Wedding Day Kit.
If you're just diving into wedding planning and feeling a little unsure about what you'll need the morning of your big day—you are so not alone. One thing I’ve noticed as a wedding photographer (working in both Arizona and Tennessee) is that hardly any bride realizes she should bring a little detail kit for the morning of the wedding.
So let’s talk about it! I’m going to walk you through what this mysterious “detail kit” actually is, why it matters, and exactly what to put in it—so you’re not scrambling the morning of your wedding or missing out on those Pinterest-worthy flat lay photos.
So, what even is a detail kit?
Basically, it’s a little box or bag filled with all the pretty, personal, meaningful things you’ve chosen for your day—your rings, jewelry, invitations, perfume, etc.
When I arrive on the morning of your wedding, one of the first things I do is style and photograph those items. They help set the tone for your entire gallery and tell the beginning of your story.
Quick tip: Keep both your details and your fiancé’s in one place! I’ll photograph everything at once and make sure to return the groom’s items to his suite before he gets dressed.
Don’t forget about his details too!
These little things tell his story and deserve some love too:
- His suit or tux on a hanger
- Shoes (and fun socks if he has them)
- Watch, cufflinks, tie or bowtie, tie bar, pocket square
- His ring
- A vow book or letter to you
- Anything sentimental—maybe a flask, a photo, or a gift from you
Just pop these in with your things so I can knock them all out together. I’ll bring them back safely—no stress!
Little local touches go a long way
If you're getting married in Arizona, throw in something desert-inspired—like pampas grass, a turquoise ring, or cactus-themed stationery.
If you're tying the knot in Tennessee, rustic details like leather vow books, wood ring boxes, or a Southern family heirloom photograph beautifully too.
Reception Flat Lay Details
This one’s fun and often forgotten!
Once the party kicks off and the formalities are over, I love capturing a little “reception flat lay.” This could be the cake server resting beside a half-eaten slice, florals scattered on your head table, or your shoes tossed under your chair after hours of dancing.
It’s a still-life version of the night—quiet, candid, and so sentimental.
If there are any reception items you’re really excited about (custom signage, menus, cocktail napkins, etc.), let me know ahead of time. We’ll make a plan to capture them while the room still looks magical.
A few final tips for a stress-free morning:
- Pack everything the night before in a box or tote labeled “DETAILS”
- Ask a bridesmaid to help me gather it when I arrive
- Ask your stationer for an extra invite suite to be used for photos
- Chat with your florist about loose blooms or greenery for flat lays
- Most importantly: don’t overthink it—this is about your story, not perfection!
