We’ve all seen the classic “say cheese” photo. Everyone lined up, smiling at the camera—and don’t get me wrong, those shots definitely have their place (especially for Grandma’s fridge). But as a photographer, the images that really stay with me—the ones my clients treasure most—are the real ones. The quiet hand squeezes. The belly laughs. The happy tears that sneak up mid-sentence.
That’s why I believe in candid portraiture—those honest, unposed moments that truly reflect the heart of a wedding day or a family session.
Beyond the Smile: Exploring Candid Portraiture
As a Knoxville-based photographer, I've had the privilege of capturing some of life’s most beautiful in-between moments, ones you don’t always see coming but never forget once you do. Sure, I love a good posed shot, but where the real magic happens? It’s in the candid moments. The honest ones. The unexpected ones.
Why Candid Moments Matter
Think about it: the way a bride grips her dad’s hand before walking down the aisle. The teary laugh during a best friend’s toast. The pure joy on a child’s face while playing tag during a family session. Those aren’t moments you can stage: they're real, raw, and full of emotion. And to me, that’s what photography is all about.
Weddings and family sessions are filled with these fleeting gems. You just have to know how to look for them.
My Approach: A Mix of Prompting and Presence
Over the years, I’ve found the sweet spot between gentle guidance and simply stepping back. During family sessions, I’ll often give prompts, like having everyone play a game or share a silly secret, to get everyone laughing and interacting naturally. It’s not about forcing a smile. It’s about creating space for connection.
At weddings, I take more of a “fly on the wall” approach. Whether it’s the first look or a packed dance floor at the reception, I’m there, but not in the moment. I let it unfold. I catch the happy tears, the spontaneous laughter, the little glances that say everything.
Candid Moments = Lasting Memories
The feedback I get from couples and families always makes my heart swell. More often than not, it’s the candid images they treasure most. They’ll say things like, “I didn’t even know you caught that,” or “This photo just feels so us.” And that’s the goal, isn’t it? To freeze a feeling, not just a face.
Why I Love This Work
I didn’t become a photographer just to take pretty pictures—I do this because I believe in the power of storytelling. I believe in preserving what makes your love, your family, and your day truly yours. Whether we’re running through a field at golden hour or tucked into a dimly lit reception hall, I’m there to capture what matters most: the people, the energy, and the little moments in between.
