If you're planning a wedding in Lexington and stumbled across The Clerestory, you might be wondering, is this the right venue for us? I recently had the chance to second shoot a wedding there, and I want to share a behind-the-scenes look at what makes this space unique (along with a hidden gem nearby you’ll want to consider for portraits: Gratz Park).

As a light and airy photographer, I’m always searching for venues with gorgeous natural light, flexible layouts, and charming details that translate beautifully on camera. The Clerestory and Gratz Park check so many of those boxes, but they also come with a few things to keep in mind. So here’s my honest take on both spaces, in case you’re still venue shopping.


The Clerestory: Light-Filled Elegance with Industrial Edge

The first thing I thought walking into The Clerestory was: “This space is a dream.”

It’s 100% a blank slate, wide open, clean, and full of natural light thanks to massive windows and high ceilings. From a photography standpoint, those high ceilings and giant windows are a huge win. If you're into the light and airy style, this place was made for you.

Out front, there’s a gorgeous flower bed that really shines in spring and summer, making it a perfect spot for portraits or a first look. And because the venue itself leans modern and industrial, you can bring in just about any aesthetic—romantic florals, colorful pops, minimalist vibes—you name it.

A few practical things to consider:

  • Guest size: It can comfortably hold around 100–150 guests. If you're planning something smaller, just be aware the space might feel a little big.
  • Getting ready: There’s a lovely bridal suite on site, but no separate groom’s area. The guys will likely need to get ready off-site or hang out in the bathroom before the ceremony.
  • Photo variety: Gratz Park is just a few minutes away and makes the perfect pairing if you want to add some greenery and softer textures to your wedding gallery.

Gratz Park: A Romantic, Quiet Spot for Wedding Portraits

Gratz Park is such a gem, and I’m honestly surprised more people don’t use it for wedding photos. It’s peaceful, has a charming fountain, and is surrounded by classic Lexington architecture and greenery.

When I was there, it was totally quiet—no crowds, no distractions—which made it easy for the couple to relax and just enjoy the moment. The photos turned out so dreamy and timeless.

That said, there are a few things to keep in mind here, too:

  • Lighting: If the sun is harsh, we’ll stick to shaded spots for the best light. But on overcast days? It’s stunning.
  • Privacy: If you’re trying to keep the couple hidden before the ceremony, there aren’t a ton of spots to “tuck away” in this park. A shuttle or bus may be helpful to time things just right.
  • Style fit: If you love the idea of romantic portraits that feel intimate, classic, and just a touch old-world, this is your spot.

A Note From Me

While I was second shooting during this wedding, I had the chance to really get to know both The Clerestory and Gratz Park, and now they’re both on my “yes please, let’s go back!” list.

Even though I’m based in Knoxville, I happily travel to Lexington for weddings. If you're planning your big day at either of these locations, I’d love to be your photographer.
