Is The Barn Event Center of the Smokies Worth It? My Honest Thoughts as a Wedding Photographer

If you're looking for a barn wedding venue in Townsend, Tennessee, you've probably come across The Barn Event Center of the Smokies. I recently photographed a wedding here, and after spending an entire day on the property (including a day full of rain), I have a pretty good idea of what it's actually like.

Overall? I think it's a really solid venue.

It has beautiful mountain views, a great outdoor ceremony location, and enough portrait spots that you never feel like you're taking the same photo over and over. Like every venue, it has a few things to keep in mind, but I'd absolutely photograph another wedding here.

The Ceremony Space Was My Favorite Part

If you're dreaming of an outdoor ceremony venue in Townsend, Tennessee, this is probably what you'll love most.

The ceremony site sits lower on the property and is surrounded by trees, which means guests have some shade while still getting those Smoky Mountain views in the background.

One thing I thought was really neat was that the wedding party rides a shuttle down to the ceremony site. It's a small detail, but it helps keep everything organized and makes the entrance feel a little more special.

The weather on this wedding day wasn't exactly ideal. It rained most of the day, but it stopped just before the ceremony started, and the couple still got to be married outside. That alone gave me a lot of confidence in how the venue handles unpredictable Tennessee weather.

The Reception Barn

The reception is held inside the barn, and it's exactly what you'd expect from a rustic venue—but in a good way.

It still feels clean and elegant without trying too hard to be fancy. If your vision is rustic with a little bit of elegance mixed in, I think this space fits that style really well.

There Are So Many Places for Photos

This is where the venue really shines from a photographer's perspective.

Instead of having one or two nice spots, you have options everywhere.

There are:

• Open fields
• Mountain views
• Several ponds and water features
• Gardens
• Large trees
• A carriage
• The barn itself

You can spend the whole day on the property and still have a gallery that feels varied.

What I Didn't Love

No venue is perfect, so here's the one thing I noticed.

The bridal suite is spacious and works well for getting ready, but the groom's getting-ready space is much more limited. It wasn't a dealbreaker by any means, but it's something couples should know ahead of time if they're expecting both sides to have equally large preparation spaces.

I also photographed a wedding with a fairly large bridal party. We made it work, and the photos turned out beautifully, but some portrait locations are easier to use with smaller groups. That's not necessarily a negative, just something to keep in mind if you're planning a really big wedding party.

The Rain Plan

Since it rained most of the day, I got to see how the venue handled less-than-perfect weather.

Luckily, we never had to move the ceremony indoors, but knowing there was an indoor option ready to go made the day a lot less stressful.

If you're getting married in East Tennessee, having a solid backup plan is a huge plus.

When Should You Get Married Here?

I photographed this wedding in early August.

The property was still green and beautiful, but a few flowers had definitely started feeling the Tennessee summer heat.

Personally, I think this venue would be at its absolute best in April, May, or September when everything is blooming or just starting to show some fall color.

That being said, I'd happily photograph another August wedding here.

My Overall Thoughts

Would I recommend The Barn Event Center of the Smokies?

Yes.

I think it's a great choice for couples who want mountain views without driving deep into the Smokies, an outdoor ceremony surrounded by nature, and a rustic reception space that still feels polished.

Is it perfect? No venue is.

But it offers a lot more variety than many barn venues I've photographed, and from a photographer's perspective, that matters. More variety means more unique wedding photos and more opportunities throughout the day.
