Hiwassee River Weddings Venue in Tennessee | A Photographer’s Perspective
If you’re dreaming of a wedding venue in Tennessee that’s right on the water, I recently photographed a wedding at Hiwassee River Weddings, and it is seriously one to have on your radar.
It’s about an hour and 20 minutes from Knoxville, and the drive in alone is stunning. The road leading up to the venue is peaceful and scenic (just note, it’s mostly one lane, so if another car comes through, it can get a little tight, but totally manageable).
Ceremony Options: River Views or Tree-Covered Magic
One of the things I love most about this venue is that you have two ceremony options:
- Right along the river (literally steps away from the water)
- Tucked into the trees with overhead lighting or hanging florals
The wedding I photographed took place in the trees, and they opted for just the lights, no florals, and it was so beautiful. The tree coverage gave a mix of soft shade and a little bit of dappled light, but overall it was really flattering lighting (especially with some cloud cover that day).
Best Photo Locations at Hiwassee River Weddings
From a photographer’s perspective… this venue is a dream.
The River ( MUST-DO)
Golden hour by the water? Unreal.
This is easily the biggest highlight of the venue and where I’d recommend carving out time for portraits.
You’re so close to the water it almost feels like you could touch it (you’re not supposed to—but it’s that close 👀).
The Tree Tunnel
There’s also this really cool tree tunnel that was perfect for groom + groomsmen photos. It gives a completely different vibe from the river, moody and editorial.
Around the Property
We didn’t do a first look, but we did a first touch near the front of the building, and there are plenty of little spots to walk around for portraits without feeling cramped.
Family photos worked really well at the ceremony site: easy, organized, and pretty.
Reception Space + Flow
The indoor reception space has a rustic but clean wooden feel, super versatile depending on how you style it.
A few things to note:
- You will need flash photography indoors
- The dance floor space is on the smaller side
- Best suited for smaller weddings or groups that aren’t huge dancers
There is also an outdoor area that works really well for cocktail hour, which helps the flow of the day feel relaxed and spread out.
Guest Experience (What to Know)
- Plenty of parking (gravel)
- Golf cart available to shuttle guests from parking to the venue
- Mostly gravel/stone throughout the property
Heels are doable, but I’d recommend flats for most guests, there’s a decent amount of walking.
For accessibility:
- The ceremony sites involve stairs for most guests
- There is a gravel path and golf cart access that can help, but it’s something to keep in mind when planning
Weather Backup Plan
There is an indoor option for ceremonies if needed.
It’s not the strongest backup design-wise, but it’s definitely better than being rained on, and still keeps the day moving smoothly.
Who This Venue Is Perfect For
This venue is ideal for:
- Couples who love nature
- Anyone wanting a waterfront wedding in Tennessee
- Laid-back, relaxed wedding days
- Smaller to mid-size guest counts
Who It Might Not Be For
This might not be the best fit if you:
- Want a super formal or luxury indoor venue
- Prefer minimal walking
- Want a large dance-floor-focused reception
Budget
I would consider this a mid-range venue, but it could easily lean more luxury depending on how you style and customize your day.
Final Thoughts
What really makes Hiwassee River Weddings stand out is how close you are to the water.
It’s not just a “view”, you’re in it, surrounded by it, experiencing it all day long.
